Hey wellness lovers! Today I'm introducing one of the hottest sports in the U.S. right now — pickleball.
Honestly, when I first heard the name, I thought, "What even is pickleball? It looks kind of like tennis — why is everyone so obsessed with it?" So I looked into it, and it turns out it's a mashup of tennis, badminton, and ping pong. What really surprised me was seeing people of every age playing it — twenty-somethings, folks in their forties and fifties, even people in their seventies. That got me curious enough to try it myself. Pickleball delivers a serious dopamine rush without putting much strain on your joints.
🏓 What Is Pickleball?
It's played on a court about the size of a badminton court, with a low net, a lightweight paddle, and a perforated plastic ball similar to a wiffle ball. Because the court is small, there's not much sprinting involved, which makes it a joint-friendly cardio workout for your knees and ankles.
💡 Summer Pickleball Tips
1. Master "the kitchen"
- The 7-foot zone in front of the net is called "the kitchen," or the non-volley zone. Instead of smashing the ball, practice the "dink" — a soft shot that drops just over the net into your opponent's kitchen.
- This lets you win points through strategy and quick reflexes rather than raw power, so you burn a lot less energy.
2. Beat the heat with good timing
- Hard courts absorb and radiate heat, so aim for around 7 a.m. or after 6 p.m. when it's cooler.
- You'll sweat more than you'd expect between all the laughing and chatting, so bring an electrolyte drink.
3. Enjoy the social connection
- Pickleball is usually played in doubles, which naturally puts you close to your partner and opponents — lots of laughter and conversation along the way. It's as good for your mental health as it is for your body.
As we get older, exercising with other people rather than alone doesn't just help physically — it has real benefits for our mental and cognitive health too. I mostly play with my husband, and honestly, it's brought us closer than before.
👕 What to Wear
- Since there's a lot of side-to-side movement, go for a moisture-wicking polyester-spandex top, lined shorts or a tennis skirt, or stretchy leggings.
- A sweat-wicking cap or visor, UV-protective sports sunglasses, and water-resistant sunscreen round out the look.
👟 Footwear
- Skip running shoes and go for court shoes (tennis shoes) with strong lateral support — they hold up much better under quick side-to-side direction changes.
- Look for a non-marking, slip-resistant sole and low-profile cushioning to help protect your ankles.
- Pair with breathable mesh and thick, moisture-wicking sports socks.
Staying healthy doesn't have to feel like a chore. Pickleball lets you take care of your body and your mind at the same time, all while having fun with people around you.
