This time I'm bringing you something a little different. It's not intense exercise, but it's a weekend routine that lets you stay active and eat well at the same time — farmers market walking.

Weekend mornings at the farmers market, especially in summer, are honestly the part of my weekend I look forward to most. It's less about exercising and more about picking up delicious seasonal food, grabbing some pretty fresh flowers, and treating myself to a tasty snack — that's what makes me excited for it. But as a bonus, I end up walking well over 4,000 to 5,000 steps without even trying, so it turns into exercise too.

🍅 Why "Farmers Market Walking"?

If you want to move your body comfortably without any formal workout, this is hard to beat. Wandering from tent to tent and chatting with vendors, you end up racking up a surprising number of steps without even noticing.

What's even better is the food itself. You get to meet seasonal produce at its most nutrient-dense — fresh fruits and vegetables, organic herbs. Choosing ingredients like these is basically a delicious investment in your own health.

💡 Tips for a Fun, Healthy Market Walk

1. Build an "early bird" routine

  • Going as soon as the market opens is best — you get first pick of the freshest, best-looking produce.
  • You'll also avoid the midday heat and crowds, which makes the whole walk more relaxed.

2. Fill your basket with the rainbow

  • Set yourself a small mission: grab at least one item in each color — red, green, yellow, purple.
  • Different colored phytonutrients bring different antioxidant benefits, so shopping this way naturally builds a well-balanced week of meals.

3. Pack eco-friendly shopping essentials

  • Skip the plastic bags and bring a sturdy canvas tote or a foldable cart instead — keeping your hands free makes for a much more comfortable walk. Bring a tumbler too, so you can enjoy a local coffee along the way.

There's a weekend market about seven minutes from where I live — the Redmond Saturday Market. I love it because you can find such a wide variety of genuinely fresh seasonal vegetables and local products there.

👕 What to Wear

  • Breathable fabrics like linen and cotton are perfect here — think a cropped linen top with shorts, a comfortable cotton dress, or wide-leg utility pants.
  • Mornings can still be cool, so a light layer like a thin shirt or cardigan works well too.
  • A wide-brimmed straw hat or ball cap, UV-protective sunglasses, and sunscreen are all must-haves — honestly, sunscreen might be the number one essential for any outdoor activity.

👟 Footwear

  • You'll be crossing concrete, asphalt, and grass, plus carrying the extra weight of your shopping bags, so well-cushioned walking shoes or lifestyle sneakers are your best bet. Good arch support also takes pressure off your knees and lower back.
  • Breathable mesh shoes or easy slip-ons work well too.
  • Skip thin-soled flats or heels — they make it much easier to lose your balance when you're carrying a heavy load.

Farmers market walking is proof that taking care of your health doesn't require some big commitment or elaborate plan. Just walking, browsing, and picking out good ingredients is wellness enough on its own.
