Hi everyone! Summer has finally arrived. The midday heat can be brutal, but early mornings in my neighborhood park are still cool and crisp — the perfect window for a walk, or a jog.
To be honest, I used to believe that cardio only "counted" if I worked up a real sweat and got my heart pounding. But once I hit my mid-forties, my knees started telling a different story. That's when I started looking into low-impact workouts that wouldn't wreck my joints, and one of them is what I'm sharing today: slow jogging.
This kicks off a five-part summer series on low-impact outdoor activities for women in their 40s and 50s. First up is a morning ritual I've completely fallen for lately — slow jogging.
"Jogging slowly, with the crisp scent of pine drifting in on the breeze, keeps me feeling refreshed the whole way through. It doesn't even feel like exercise — it feels more like my mind is being cleansed."
I actually started out just walking. It was peaceful, but I wanted my heart rate up a little more. Going back to my old running pace, though, put too much strain on my knees. That's when I discovered slow jogging — slow enough that you could still hold a conversation with a friend the entire time.
Personally, that pace is exactly right for me. If you're too out of breath to talk, you're going too fast. My own rule of thumb: if I can still chat with the person next to me, I'm at the right speed.
Doing this kind of slow jog through a pine-lined park is honestly a little magical. My stride shortens, my breathing deepens, and the scent of pine seems to clear the fog right out of my head. It lowers cortisol, barely stresses my knees at all, and has become my own personal reset for both body and mind.
💡 Summer Slow Jogging Tips
1. Slow it down, but keep your form honest
- Go just a touch faster than a walk. If you can't hold a conversation, you're overdoing it.
- Keep your stride short and light to protect your knees, landing on your midfoot rather than your heel.
2. Make the most of early mornings
- Aim for around 7 a.m. to avoid the harshest midday UV exposure.
- Jogging in cool morning air keeps your heart rate steady and gives your metabolism a natural lift.
3. Breathe with intention (and connect with nature)
- Look for trails lined with pine or cedar — the phytoncides they release help lower stress and support immunity.
- Breathe deeply through your nose and mouth, syncing your breath to your steps (two steps in, two steps out).
There's a small park near my house — one loop is about 0.4 miles, ringed with tall pine trees. I love slow jogging there. It's rarely crowded, and some mornings it almost feels like my own private park.
👕 What to Wear
- Moisture-wicking fabrics like polyester, nylon, or spandex blends work best. Skip cotton — it holds onto sweat, gets heavy, and can cause chafing.
- Go for loose, stretchy short sleeves paired with running shorts or leggings.
- A breathable cap or visor, UV-protective sunglasses, and sweat-resistant sunscreen are non-negotiable.
👟 Footwear
- Choose running shoes with good shock absorption and generous midsole cushioning.
- Look for a flexible forefoot and a roomy, wide toe box.
- Pair with a breathable mesh upper and seamless, blister-resistant performance socks.
You don't need a pricey spa treatment or an elaborate wellness routine to genuinely take care of yourself. Sometimes the best medicine is free, and it's waiting right outside your front door. Lace up this week and head to your nearest park — let's make this summer a healthy one, together. ✨
