Episode four of this series takes us out onto the road. If we're being honest, it's the classic of all classics for combining a functional workout with pure seasonal enjoyment — cycling.

Let's be honest, walking or running can feel pretty rough in the summer heat. But when I hop on my bike instead, I get the workout, plus that cool, refreshing rush of wind that just puts me in a better mood. I think that's exactly why I end up hitting the trail on my bike so often once summer rolls around.

The Benefits of Cycling

Cycling is a classic low-impact exercise. Since the saddle supports your body weight, there's almost no load on your knees, ankles, or hips. At the same time, it keeps major muscle groups — quads, hamstrings, glutes — constantly engaged, which boosts your metabolism and is great for both fat burning and maintaining muscle strength.

💡 Summer Cycling Tips

1. Get your saddle height and cadence right

  • If your saddle sits too low, your knees bend too much and take on extra strain. The ideal height leaves your knee slightly bent — around 15 to 20 degrees — at the bottom of the pedal stroke.
  • Instead of grinding away in a heavy gear, spin a lighter gear at around 80–90 revolutions per minute. It's much easier on your muscles.

2. Make the most of crisp morning air

  • Asphalt soaks up heat all afternoon, so aim to ride around 7 a.m. The air is clearer and the bike paths are quieter, which makes it safer too.

3. Hydrate as you go

  • The wind evaporates your sweat so quickly that it's easy to underestimate how much fluid you're actually losing. Get in the habit of taking small sips of water every 15–20 minutes.
  • Sticking to car-free park trails or dedicated bike paths makes for a much safer ride.

There's a trail about ten minutes from my house — the Sammamish River Trail — where I ride often. It's a flat, paved route that runs about 11 miles along the river, with beautiful scenery, and it's one of the most popular riding spots around. I'd encourage you to find something similar close to home too. Honestly, whatever I'm doing, accessibility and convenience matter a lot to me — that's what actually keeps me coming back to it.

👕 What to Wear

  • If you're planning to ride for more than 30 minutes, padded cycling shorts are a must — they cut down saddle discomfort dramatically.
  • Loose clothing flaps around in the wind, so go for a fitted, moisture-wicking jersey or top instead.
  • Pack a neck gaiter (buff) for sun protection and a pair of UV-protective sports sunglasses.

👟 Footwear

  • Overly cushioned shoes like running shoes don't transfer power well on the pedals and can tire your feet out faster. Go for training shoes with a relatively firm sole instead.
  • Tie your laces tightly and tuck them in so they don't get caught in the chain.
  • Flip-flops or sandals are an absolute no — they're slippery and leave your toes unprotected.

Cutting through the wind, going farther, building strength with zero stress on your joints — is there a better way to close out the summer?
